Loss of employees on Malaysia flight a blow, U.S. chipmaker says

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Employees of Freescale Semiconductor who were on a Malaysia Airlines flight presumed to have crashed were doing sophisticated work at the U.S. chipmaker, a company spokesman said on Sunday.
The 20 Freescale employees, among 239 people on flight MH370, were mostly engineers and other experts working to make the company’s chip facilities in Tianjin, China, and Kuala Lumpur more efficient, said Mitch Haws, vice president, global communications and investor relations.
“These were people with a lot of experience and technical background and they were very important people,” Haws said. “It’s definitely a loss for the company.”
None of Austin, Texas-based Freescale’s most senior executives were on board the Boeing Co 777-200ER airliner that vanished from radar screens about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on Saturday.
The employees who were on board, 12 from Malaysia and eight from China, came from a range of disciplines and they were part of a broad push by Chief Executive Officer Gregg Lowe to make Freescale more efficient and cost effective, Haws said.
Top-quality engineers are hard to come by for chipmakers and other technology companies, and losing them can have a major impact on business, regardless of their seniority.
While the employees on the flight account for less than 1 percent of Freescale’s global workforce of 16,800 people, they were working toward the same goals and their loss will reverberate throughout Freescale, Haws said.
They had been streamlining facilities in Tianjin and Kuala Lumpur that Freescale uses for testing and packaging microchips used in automobiles, consumer products, telecommunications infrastructure and industrial equipment.
On Sunday, Freescale was organizing transportation and accommodation for the 20 staff members’ families, as well as providing grief counseling, Haws said.
One of the chipmaker’s long-time competitors, Texas Instruments, tweeted on Saturday: “We extend our condolences to the families and coworkers of the @Freescale employees aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.”

Patience Pays Off For Private Equity In NXP Semiconductors $11.8B Takeover Of Freescale

Freescale Semiconductor’s $17.6 billion 2006 leveraged buyout won’t go down as one of the private equity industry’s better deals after the highly indebted semiconductor fell into distress during the credit crunch. But hanging on is paying off for Freescale’s four private equity owners: Blackstone [Owned mortgage on WTC7 demolished in massive insurance fraud on 9/11], The Carlyle Group [Former Chairman the late Frank Carlucci was Kristine ‘Con Air’ Marcy’s boss at OEO, former director of the private security firm Wackenhut and former Chairman Emeritus of Nortel Networks], Permira Funds and TPG Capital.
On Sunday evening, NXP Semiconductors said it would buy Freescale for $11.8 billion, in a cash and stock deal that creates the semiconductor sector’s top supplier to automotive markets just as manufacturers add an array new of computing technologies to their car lines. For Freescale’s private equity owners, which collectively own 66.24% of the company’s shares, Sunday’s price tag allows them to cash out some stock at break-even prices on a deal that once looked like a cautionary tale for the industry. Because a majority of the Freescale deal comes from NXP stock, the combined company’s ability to wrench out operational synergies and find new markets could also eventually push the bubble-era LBO into a profit.”

Troubled outsourcer Serco has launched a £555m rights issue as it starts on what chief executive Rupert Soames called “the path of recovery”. Shares in the company, which had more than half a billion pounds wiped off its market value in November when it stunned the market with a huge profit warning, [after fraudulently charging UK government for transporting fake prisoners in Con Air SWAT teams] tumbled again as Mr Soames set out the full extent of the Serco‘s troubles. … The company’s rights issue, on which Rothschild is advising cf Victor Rothschild, Pearl Harbor and the Henry Tizard Patent Pool, will see 549m new shares issued. The scheme is on a 1:1 basis and is priced at 101p, a deeply discounted 51.1pc compared with the previous closing price, and a 34pc discount on theoretical ex-rights price. The fundraising – which is subject to shareholder approval – is fully underwritten and the proceeds will be used to cut Serco‘s debt by £450m. At the end of the year Serco‘s net debt stood at £682m. The company said that subject to the rights issue’s completion, it had struck an agreement with its creditors to refinance its funding.”
