“Greece has “serious indications” that a fire that killed at least 83 people near Athens earlier this week was started deliberately, Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas says.

The blaze broke out on Monday and hit coastal villages popular with tourists.

Some 60 people are still being treated in hospital, 11 in intensive care. Dozens more are missing.

Earlier, rescue workers searching a cliffside in the seaside town of Mati found more human remains.

A large number of the victims were caught close to the cliff as the flames spread rapidly, whipped up by winds as high as 120km/h (75mph). Many of the survivors were saved by the sea, but dozens of victims were unable to reach the water.

Mr Toskas also said that another fire that broke out near Athens a few hours earlier but did not cause casualties had been started intentionally.

He added that “climate conditions” in the areas affected by fire were “extreme due to climate change”.”

A man suspected of starting a wildfire in California that has spread over thousands of acres and prompted widespread evacuations was arrested on Wednesday night, the authorities said.

The man, Brandon N. McGlover, was charged with five counts of arson to wildland, according to a news release from Cal Fire, a state agency responsible for fire protection. The Cranston fire, as it is known, has spread rapidly across a mountainous area east of Los Angeles.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, the fire had expanded to cover 7,500 acres with 5 percent of it contained, said Lyn Sieliet, a United States Forest Service spokeswoman. Mr. McGlover, 32, is also accused of starting multiple smaller fires, according to the news release.

The Cranston fire started at about noon on Wednesday, according to the Forest Service. The entire community of Idyllwild, a mountain town about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, and other areas of the San Jacinto Mountains were evacuated on Wednesday evening.”

Troubled outsourcer Serco has launched a £555m rights issue as it starts on what chief executive Rupert Soames called “the path of recovery”. Shares in the company, which had more than half a billion pounds wiped off its market value in November when it stunned the market with a huge profit warning, [after fraudulently charging UK government for transporting fake prisoners in Con Air SWAT teams] tumbled again as Mr Soames set out the full extent of the Serco‘s troubles. … The company’s rights issue, on which Rothschild is advising cf Victor Rothschild, Pearl Harbor and the Henry Tizard Patent Pool, will see 549m new shares issued. The scheme is on a 1:1 basis and is priced at 101p, a deeply discounted 51.1pc compared with the previous closing price, and a 34pc discount on theoretical ex-rights price. The fundraising – which is subject to shareholder approval – is fully underwritten and the proceeds will be used to cut Serco‘s debt by £450m. At the end of the year Serco‘s net debt stood at £682m. The company said that subject to the rights issue’s completion, it had struck an agreement with its creditors to refinance its funding.”

“Measurement of AWACS Team Performance in Distributed Mission Scenarios … Distributed Mission Training (DMT) enables participants to perform within a virtual battlespace created through networking of several high-fidelity simulations. In a recent exercise, ROADRUNNER ’98, several agencies interacted to create several battlespace missions in which “friendly” fighter aircraft and command and control crewmembers participated as trainees, while supporting roles and enemy forces were either played by operational personnel (virtual players) or created by intelligent agent technology (constructed forces). Thus, trainees participated in complex demanding war scenarios without the usual constraints of cost, safety, and security normally associated with live-fire training.
